Police said some persons attacked and killed a newly elected head of a panchayat at Samba in Jammu and injured his son and a security man. Three militants were also killed in separate incidents at Handwara.
On Wednesday during the 11th phase of elections a high polling percentage of 70.61 was recorded in 10 blocks in Jammu and Kashmir. However, the polling stations in the ancestral area of hard line separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani wore a deserted look with hardly any voter turning up. At Batengo, the ancestral place of another senior separatist leader Prof Abdul Gani Bhat, 45 per cent votes were cast.
Police said Jaswant Singh, a newly elected sarpanch, and his son were attacked allegedly by some persons at Vijapur-Samba. Jaswant was killed, while his son injured.
