<p>In order to ensure transparency and adequate attendance of the staff and students at hostels run by the University of Mysore (UoM), the authorities are gearing up to instal bio-metric systems at hostels in Mysuru, Hassan, Chamarajanagar and Kodagu districts.</p>.<p class="bodytext">The systems will be installed at 18 hostels within a week. The authorities have already collected fingerprints of students and staff from five hostels. A majority of the technical works related to this have been completed.</p>.<p class="bodytext">UoM Computer Division convener G Hemanth Kumar said the bio-metric systems will be fixed at the entry and exit points of hostels.</p>.<p class="bodytext">While it would also be installed at dining halls and kitchens in big hostels, it will be placed only at entry and exit points at small hostels, he said.</p>.<p class="bodytext">The authorities are also planning to instal additional CCTV cameras to check the preparation of food in kitchens and also monitor students in the dining halls.</p>.<p class="bodytext">With bio-metric system at dining halls in the university canteens, we can easily get details about the actual number of students consuming food, the officer said.</p>.<p class="bodytext">By adopting these technologies, it is possible to maintain transparency and discipline in hostels, he added.</p>.<p class="CrossHead">Irregularities in KSET</p>.<p class="bodytext">Deputy Chairman in the Legislative Council Marithibbegowda has alleged irregularities in the Karnataka State Eligibility Test (KSET) conducted by UoM and demanded a probe against the UoM Registrar. According to Marithibbegowda, six syndicate members of the UoM were appointed for examination duty. The examination was held on December 31, 2017.</p>.<p class="bodytext">In a letter to the government, Marithibbegowda mentioned that appointing syndicate members for examination duty is against University Grants Commission (UGC) norms.</p>.<p class="bodytext">The six members, who obtained a remuneration of Rs 2,000 each, worked as examination supervisors.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Marithibbegowda demanded that the government remove all the six members from the syndicate and also sought a probe against the Registrar.</p>
