<p>Shivamogga: As many as 36 government schools in the district are on the verge of closure from this year, if the government fails to grant permission to start English medium sections.</p>.<p>Admitting it, officials from the School Education and Literacy Department stated that 36 proposals have already been submitted to the government seeking permission before the commencement of the new academic year.</p>.<p>Following pressure from the MLAs of the district, 33 additional proposals will be sent soon.</p>.Karnataka: Education department cancels recognition of 3 schools of Gokula Vidyasamsthe.<p class="bodytext">The existing rule of the government that permission to start English medium sections from class 1st, 6th and 8th could be granted only if the strength in Kannada medium sections is above 25, has turned out to be an impediment.</p>.<p class="bodytext">The officials are of the view that the existing strength in these government Kannada medium schools is less than 25 and the commencement of English sections would reduce the strength further. If English sections are not started, these schools have to be closed down.</p>.<p class="CrossHead">‘Have poor student strength’</p>.<p class="bodytext">Speaking to <span class="italic">DH</span>, School Education and Literacy Department Deputy Director Manjunath said, “At least 10 schools are from Thirthahalli taluk, 8 from Bhadravathi, 2 from Hosanagar, 9 from Sagar and 7 from Sorab. These schools already have poor strength due to the absence of English section. The mandatory 25 students in Kannada sections is causing trouble for us.”</p>.<p class="bodytext">Thirthahalli Block Education Officer Ganesh Y told <span class="italic">DH</span> that a proposal has been submitted seeking English medium sections for 10 schools and another 8 schools also need the same. But these schools have single digit strength and parents are not keen to send their wards for grade 8th to these schools, due to absence of English medium sections. If there is no English medium section, these schools will have to be closed down in the absence of students.</p>.<p class="CrossHead">Population less in Malnad</p>.<p class="bodytext">Parents are already sending their wards to the nearby English medium schools for grade 8th to ensure their children will have a bright future. It’s high time the government must grant permission for the same. Besides, population in Malnad region is less and many villages have less than 10 families.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Considering all these factors, the government should grant permission to start English medium from class 1, 6 and 8th for the existence of these schools.</p>
