Primary and Secondary Education Minister Tanveer Sait said as many as 36,000 classrooms in the state were in a dilapidated condition and would be demolished soon.

Replying to a query by T A Saravana (JD-S) in the Legislative Council on Friday, Sait said another 31,000 classrooms needed minor repairs and a grant of Rs 153 crore was released for the purpose. He said there were a total of 43,895 government primary and 4,486 high schools in the state.

He said that a proposal had been sent to the Law department to bring in a provision as to utilise at least 30% of the local area development funds, allotted to legislators, for the maintenance of schools.
