While digging a foundation pit for a school building at Nadepalli in Sedam taluk, construction workers recently stumbled upon a 1.4-kg copper pot containing 415 silver coins.

The coins that weigh 4.75 kg are believed to be from the Nizam era.

The police and tahsildar Subbanna Jamkhandi arrived after being informed about the pot by the villagers.

They summoned a jeweller who confirmed genuineness of the silver coins after an examination. The coins have '70 paise' and the year '1186' minted on either side.

The coins are not similar, but have different inscriptions, said a villager.

"It is yet to be established if the coins were in circulation during the Nizam period," Jamkhandi said and added: "We are trying to ascertain details about the coins."
