As many as 88 infants from the district and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh have been admitted to the Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) hospital here for dehydration.

All these are aged 28 days or less. The infants are from the city, nearby villages, Sandur and Siraguppa taluks in the district, besides Uravakonda village in Andhra Pradesh.

While 70 infants were admitted to the hospital between April 1 and 9, 10 infants were admitted in a single day on Monday and eight on Tuesday. M Lakshminarayana Reddy, head of the department of paediatrics in the hospital, said the children were out of danger. Constant crying was a key symptom of dehydration, Reddy said. Infants should urinate eight to 10 times a day. Parents should take the children to the doctor otherwise, he said.
