<p>Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) North Karnataka chapter, established at Dharwad Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (DIMHANS) has come as a boon for may to overcome the addiction.</p><p>Alcoholics Anonymous is an international fellowship of individuals, who have successfully given up alcohol and are now committed to helping others do the same. The AA members’ meeting is held at DIMHANS every Wednesday from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm, a time known to trigger strong cravings among many struggling with alcoholism. If this peak time passes off, their crave for drinking may come down. Hence, anyone may come and take part in the meetings for free.</p><p>DIMHANS De-addiction Department’s Dr Meghamala Tavaragi said: “We are supporting AA members for conducting meetings at DIMHANS for helping addicts to overcome alcohol dependency. Stable patients of our hospital and outsiders too take part in the meetings of AA members.”</p><p>Some addicts feel to share their problems and causes for the addiction. AA members provide a platform for such people and share their sufferings. AA members interact with such people and try to convince them to lead a healthy and happy life by quitting excessive consumption of liquor.</p><p>AA Hubballi chapter co-ordinator Omprakash said: “We also conduct AA meetings every Sunday from 11:00 am to 12:00 at St Maris Church at Keshwapur in Hubballi. There are over 400 AA members in Hubballi-Dharwad. Of them, 20 to 25 active members attend meetings. There are also AA members in Vijayapur, Bagalkot and Uttara Kannada districts.”</p><p>The AA team is always ready to support the addicts who seek help to quit alcoholism. The experienced members interact with them and hear their problems patiently. Moreover, every detail, including the discussions at the AA sessions are kept confidential, he explained. “Our main aim is to encourage addicted person to overcome the problem and lead a normal life like others,” he said.</p><p>The only requirement for membership of AA is a desire to stop drinking alcohol.
