Aadhaar: Permanent centres to be opened

He was speaking at a special lecture organised as part of Legal Services Day at JSS Law College in the city on Tuesday.

Explaining that Aadhaar centres in the district will be increased from the present 75  to 450 centres, Vidyashankar said that plans to open 24/7 Aadhaar centres will be discussed with the district administration. Furthermore, a permanent training centre will also be set-up in the city to supply a steady stream of enrollment personnel.

He said that 80,000 people have enrolled from Mysore and Tumkur districts, while 40,000 UID cards have been distributed. Elaborating, he said that a massive multi-media campaign will be undertaken to impress upon the people the necessity of UID.

Expressing confidence that the district will be see 100 per cent UID enrollment by January 31, 2011, Vidyashankar said that Aadhaar centres will be opened in the remaining 28 districts from January 1, 2011.

He stated that permanent Aadhaar centres will be opened at Hobli and Panchayat levels. Also mobile units will be deployed in all nine corporation areas of the State.  He said that Karnataka will overtake Andhra Pradesh in issuing UID cards, even though the latter started one month earlier than the State. Vidyashankar said that a seven member team has arrived and is carrying out inspections in Mysore, Nanjangud and Hunsur.

Clarifying that UIDAI has not made UID mandatory, Vidyashankar observed it will be the private and State agencies that will make UID mandatory as it reduces cost and file work. The advantages also include increased efficiency and reduced corruption, he added.
He said that when UID is completely implemented, a child will also be able to receive the number the day it’s born.
