Action demanded against police for assaulting tribal

Condemning the alleged assault of a man from the tribal community by police personnel during Kalaseshwara temple fair on Sunday, people belonging to the tribal community urged the superintendent of police to initiate disciplinary action against the erring police officials.

Around 100 people belonging to the tribal community gathered in front of Kalasa police station on Sunday and condemned the incident of assault.

"After taking part in the car festival, around 15 people were waiting at K M Road for auto-rickshaw in the wee hours of Sunday to go to Heradike near Karagadde. Four police personnel who came in a jeep caned us brutally, which left us seriously injured. We have availed treatment from the government hospital," the victims Nagesh, Devappa, Ramesh, Srinivasa and Umesh said and urged for action against the police personnel. Two school going students were also assaulted, according to them.

They said they have written to the SP in this regard. A complaint has been submitted to Kalasa police station.

Karnataka Adivasi Rakshana Parishat secretary Srinivasa Gowda said that the police who have failed to take action against the people who sold liquor during the night of the fair have assaulted the innocent tribals.

Malenadu Samrakshana Vedike leader K L Vasu, tribal community leaders Srinivas, Krishnappa, Sridhar and Satish took part in the protest among others.

DySP Ramesh Jagirdar assured that an investigation will be conducted in this regard.
