'Areca peelers still unorganised'

 In the meantime, peeling off areca is also a significant livelihood of hundreds of women in Sakharayapatna, Emmedoddi, Beriru and Kadur hoblis of the taluk.

Unfortunately, these women are denied even salary, thanks to the fluctuating market of areca. At the same time, there is also a scarcity of women labourers for these works.

Though there are several bodies to look into the miseries and demands of other kinds of labourers, there is no organisation to support the areca peelers. They are still unorganised.

“Labour unions should try to provide us the status of labourers so that we too get various facilities. All areca workers should be considered as labourers,” said a few areca peelers in the taluk.
