Bengaluru cops book abetment case after MBA student found dead in rented accommodation

Bengaluru: Soladevanahalli police have registered a case of abetment to suicide after a 22-year-old college student was found dead at his rented accommodation in northern Bengaluru, officials said on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Jagan Mohanan, originally from Kozhikode in Kerala. He was a second-year MBA student at a private college in the city.

The FIR stated that Kirankumar K, the complainant and Mohanan’s brother, received a call on December 9 at 4.30 pm from his sister Shilpa that Mohanan was not responding to calls and had locked the door of his house in Thammenahalli from inside. She told him that even the house owner was not able to open the door.

Kirankumar was also informed that they placed a mobile phone in the gap between the door and saw Mohanan hanging inside. Since he was in Kerala, he informed his sister, who was in Bengaluru, to check, the FIR said.

The door was forced open, and Mohanan was found dead inside.

Extortion angle

A note left behind by the deceased was also discovered. In it, three phone numbers and a bank account number were written, and Mohanan was forced to send them Rs 24,000, the FIR noted.

"Unidentified people demanded more money from Mohanan and also threatened him,” Kirankumar was quoted as saying in the FIR.

A police investigator told DH that they have launched an investigation after registering the case on December 10 under BNS Section 108 (abetment of suicide).

"We will know the reason for the death once the investigation is concluded. We are also verifying if the unidentified callers were cybercriminals attempting to extort the deceased,” he added.
