Bengaluru vegetable vendor arrested after allegedly attacking on-duty cop

Bengaluru: A 41-year-old man suspected of involvement in two murders was shot after he allegedly attacked a head constable during a spot inspection in Bommasandra, south Bengaluru, on Saturday.

Ravi Prasad Reddy, a vegetable vendor originally from Andhra Pradesh, was arrested on Friday for abducting and murdering two people — his landlord Balappa Reddy and Madesh, a provision store owner, within two days.

On Saturday, when Hebbagodi police took Ravi for a spot inspection, he allegedly attacked head constable Ashok with a sharp object and attempted to flee. Police inspector Somashekhar fired a warning shot to restrain him, but Ravi tried to attack a sub-inspector. The inspector then shot him in the leg, injuring and immobilising him.

Police took Ravi to hospital for treatment. The injured head constable was also hospitalised for stab injuries.

"Ravi had abducted his landlord Balappa Reddy on November 6 and slit his throat for refusing to pay ransom."

"Before that, he had barged into Madesh's house in Kittaganahalli on November 4 and escaped with Rs 2 lakh in cash."

"The suspect was in debt and decided to commit robberies. To destroy evidence, he killed the victims," said Narayana M, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Electronics City).
