Bengaluru’s longest double-decker flyover planned under Namma Metro Phase 3

Bengaluru: Bengaluru’s longest double-decker planned under Namma Metro’s Phase 3 will feature entry/exit ramps at five locations and loops at nine places to serve local traffic needs, according to senior officials with knowledge of the matter. 

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) will build the 37.121-km double-deck viaduct in both corridors of 44.65-km Phase 3, which will have two corridors. 

The first corridor — JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura, covering the western stretch of the Outer Ring Road — will include a 28.486-km double-decker from Delmia Circle to Hebbal. This will make it the city’s longest flyover. 

The second metro line — Hosahalli to Kadabagere along Magadi Road — will include a 8.635-km double-decker from KHB Colony to Kadabagere. 

The metro line will run on the lower deck, with the metro line above, similar to the Ragigudda-Silk Board Junction double-decker. 

In Corridor 1, the double-decker will begin at Delmia Circle — where the existing flyover will be torn down — with a 631-metre entry/exit ramp. Its end point will be Hebbal, where the flyover will separate from the metro line. The flyover will branch off towards the airport while the metro line will continue towards Kempapura, the terminal station. 

In Corridor 2, entry/exit ramps are planned at KHB Colony (Hosahalli), Sunkadakatte and Kadabagere. 

At Sunkadakatte, ramps will run on either side of the depot to reduce the viaduct height. This will allow the depot entry-line ramp to fit within the available land. 

Corridor 1 will have loops totalling 5.565 km at seven locations: Sarakki Junction (Kanakapura Road), NICE Road, Mysuru Road, Vinayaka Layout, Sumanahalli Junction (Magadi Road), Goraguntepalya (Tumakuru Road) and Hebbal (towards the airport). 

Corridor 2 will have 3.19 km of loops at two locations — Sumanahalli Junction and NICE Road. 

Except for the Delmia Circle flyover, the double-decker will run either beside or above existing flyovers at Hosakerehalli, Mysuru Road, Nagarabhavi and Sumanahalli. 

The Rs 9,692.33-crore double-decker project will be fully funded by Karnataka, with the state government contributing 50%, the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) 10% and the remaining 40% through loans. 

Toll charges

As per the feasibility-cum-Detailed Project Report (DPR), the project’s Financial Internal Rate of Return (FIRR) will be 16.5% with combined revenue from the metro and the tolled road, making it financially viable. 

The government plans to collect tolls but charges have not been finalised, DH reported in September
2025. 

Although the Centre approved Phase 3 on August 16, 2024, civil works have been delayed due to the double-decker plan. While Phase 3’s tentative deadline is May 2031, the double-decker is expected to be completed by 2030. 

The BMRCL has prepared a Detailed Design Consultancy (DDC) report incorporating the double-decker and plans to call tenders in the coming weeks. 

A single contractor will build both the metro and the flyover. 

6 interchange stations

Phase 3 will have six interchange stations: JP Nagar 4th Phase (Pink Line), JP Nagar (Green Line), Mysuru Road (Purple Line), Sumanahalli Cross (C1 and C2), Goraguntepalya (Green Line) and Kempapura (Blue
Line).
