BLR airport unveils India’s largest greenfield domestic cargo terminal

Bengaluru: The Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (BLR Airport), in partnership with Menzies Aviation, has launched India’s largest Greenfield Domestic Cargo Terminal (DCT) in terms of designed capacity.

Sprawled over seven acres, the DCT boasts a peak handling capacity of approximately 360,000 metric tonnes, with the potential to expand to 4,00,000 metric tonnes. The facility is equipped with 42 truck docks, over 400 specially designed cargo bins, and conveyors integrated with X-ray machines to enhance security and efficiency.

Speaking at a press conference, Satyaki Raghunath, COO of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), said, “By integrating eco-friendly practices with cutting-edge technology, we have created a facility that not only addresses the growing demand for domestic cargo, but also sets benchmarks for operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.”

The terminal features real-time data capture using 40 handheld terminals and self-service kiosks for agents, significantly reducing processing times.

Special cargo capabilities

BLR Airport has established itself as a leading hub for perishable goods, being the largest exporter of mangoes, coriander, and flowers in India.

The new terminal includes dedicated storage areas for valuables, fragile items, live animals, dangerous goods, and radioactive materials, reinforcing its position as a comprehensive cargo-handling hub.

Currently, BLR Airport handles approximately 40% of all cargo in South India, the highest among the southern states.

Sustainability at the core

Designed in compliance with Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) standards, the terminal prioritises sustainability while ensuring scalability for future growth.

Key eco-friendly features include skylighting to maximise natural light, advanced ventilation systems for energy efficiency, and a dedicated sewage treatment plant for waste management.

Further, authorities also have plans to install solar panels on the roof to enhance energy efficiency.
