A separate unit to provide medical treatment to sportspersons had been set up at the Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedics in Bengaluru, Health Minister U T Khader said on Tuesday.

Addressing reporters, he said that the unit is a 20-bed facility set up at a cost of Rs 10 crore. This is the second such unit dedicated for the treatment of sportspersons in the country. The other unit is located at Safdarjung hospital, Delhi. A formal inauguration of the newly set up unit has not been done due to the GP election model code of conduct. A judo player from Hassan, Sangeetha, is already undergoing treatment at the unit, he added.

Hospital Director Dr B G Tilak said the unit has three specialist doctors. Assistance of other specialist doctors and experts will be obtained for the treatment if necessary. Operations are done at very nominal charges, he added.
