DPR ready, tender to be called soon for KIA flyover project

Last Updated 05 July 2014, 20:07 IST

The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) is gearing up to start the elevated corridor on Sankey Road to improve road connectivity to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).

A senior BDA official told Deccan Herald that a detailed project report for constructing the elevated corridor and removing the existing magic box (or flyover) had been prepared. The total cost of the construction of the flyover is calculated to be Rs 1,400 crore and tenders for this will be called within a month. Ground work will also start soon.

The State government, in budget for the current fiscal has allocated Rs 1,100 crore for the project and the remaining Rs 300 crore would be incurred by the BDA, said an official.

Once the final approval from the government is obtained, ground work will start.
The existing sky walk near Basaveshwara Circle will be shifted, and permission from the government to shift the sky walk and dismantle existing structure is also awaited, the official added.

Going by the plan, the elevated corridor will help the free flow of traffic from Chalukya Hotel Circle to Hebbal Junction.

As per plan, the seven kilometre-long corridor will not disturb the Windsor Manor bridge. But the existing flyover built by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike using magic box technology at the cost of Rs 7.1 crore will be dismantled. The six lane elevated corridor will be built using steel pillars.

But traffic experts point that they should not haste into it and do some better planning. According to traffic expert MN Srihari, the road sees a PCU of around 12,000. Already one blunder had been made while constructing the magic box and this should not be repeated, he said.

He added that there was no scope to widen the road or build any structure, and the traffic was so high that there was a need for a six-lane corridor with wide roads because the road after Hebbal was wide enough. They should ensure that there are no bottlenecks en route, he said.
