Drain overflows in Navodaya Nagar, BBMP doesn't care

Overflowing open drain on the road in Navodaya Nagar, JP Nagar, in South Bengaluru, is posing a serious health problem to residents for the past several months. However, the civic agencies seem to neglect this.

The residents complain that they are unable to come out of their homes because of the stench and the deadly mosquitoes. They have visited offices of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike and the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board complaining about their condition. But as usual, the civic bodies are yet to respond positively.

“Almost all through the day the drainage water overflows on the roads, and we even can't walk on the stretch. When it rains, the water flows inside our houses,” said Kusuma, a resident.

“We are facing this problem from several years now. Garbage blocks the drain and as a result, the water cannot flow easily through the drain and overflows on roads. We have complained to the BBMP and BWSSB several times. But they have not responded to the issue. We also contacted the local representatives but no result,” complained Ananthram, another resident.

Mosquito-breeding

The road is not asphalted, and with the drainage water overflowing, it has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Residents fear the outbreak of mosquito-borne viral disease.

“The stagnant water in the drain is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Recently, my son and I were down with dengue recently. If this continues the mosquito-borne viral disease may increase in this area,” added Kusuma.

However, Shashirekha S, corporator of ward number 195, Konanakunte, speaking to DH, said: “I have not received any complaints so far. Only during rain in the area will the drain overflow."

"I will visit the spot and direct the agency concerned to solve the issue the residents are facing," the corporator added.
