Speaking to reporters after receiving the Citizen Extraordinaire award from Governor H R Bhardwaj here, he said, “The process to launch the world’s largest biometric based ID project is on schedule. The launch of numbers could take place anywhere between August 2010 and February 2011.”

He further said the Unique ID project is of unprecedented complexity and will involve challenges of technology and enrollment. “The project involves a billion people. First we will have to get people to come and enroll. The commitment given to the Prime Minister and Finance Minister will be met. The first part will involve us to do a roll and give people their numbers, based on their fingerprints,” Nilekani added.

Earlier, he said that the Unique ID project is aimed to give every citizen of the country an acknowledged existence. The award is jointly institituted by the Prestige Group in association with Rotary Bangalore Midtown.
