A day after a Haj returnee was taken to the hospital for suspected Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV), doctors at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases (RGICD) on Monday collected the nasal and throat swabs of the patient and sent it to the National Institute of Virology for analysis.

Dr Shashidhar Buggi, Director, RGICD said the 42-year-old woman who returned from Haj was asked to get hospitalised, but she refused and left for Anantapur, her native place. The woman was kept in isolation ward and was administered Tamiflu, the antiviral drug for H1N1 A Influenza. The swab results are expected after two days, Dr Buggi added.
Dr Venkatesh from Integrated Disease Surveillance Project (IDSP), Health and Family Welfare department, said instructions have been given to Bengaluru International Airport authorities to screen passengers for the infection.
