A brand new Audi car rammed an autorickshaw near Mayo Hall, killing a passenger and injuring two in the wee hours of Sunday. Police have launched a search for the occupants of the car who fled after the accident.
Deepak (19) and his cousin Karthik (20), both residents of Murphy Town and employees of a pub were returning home from work by an autorickshaw at about 2 am.
When the auto took a right turn towards Ulsoor near the Mayo Hall junction, the speeding Audi rammed it from the opposite direction. The impact of the collision was so huge that the auto was flung into the air and landed several feet away.
The car later ploughed into the footpath, before coming to a screeching halt. Deepak was killed on the spot. Karthik and auto driver Younus Ali sustained injuries.
Eyewitness
Syed Abdul Khaleel, another auto driver and an eyewitness to the accident, rushed all the three men to nearby Bowring Hospital.
According to Khaleel there were four poeple in the car —three men and a woman — all in their 20s.
He later told police that four got out of the car and discussed the incident amongst themselves, before getting away on foot. “They did not even come to help the victims,” he said. All of them absconded as Khaleel was helping the injured.
“Of the two people seated in the auto, one was killed on the spot. The other, Karthik, had been thrown far away from the vehicle. He had suffered a major head injury and was unconcious. The driver was trapped below the auto,” Khaleel said. He said he shifted all the three to the hospital in his auto and lodged a police complaint.
D G Rathnakara, inspector attached to Ashoknagar traffic police station, said going by the scene of the accident and the eyewitness account it was evident that the car was moving at a speed of 120 kmph.
“The airbags in the car inflated when the Audi struck the auto, saving those in the car,” he said.
The car had a blank number plate. A closer examination showed that it was purchased two or three days ago.
Documents found in the car showed the registration number as KA 51/TR 324, indicating that it was purchased from an agency registered under the Electronics City RTO.
The inspector said that the owner of the vehicle is yet to be found.
