Months after fare hike, Bengaluru's Namma Metro records second-highest daily ridership of 9.08 lakh

Bengaluru: Two months after it increased fares by an average of 45 per cent, Namma Metro recorded its second-highest ridership on April 17.

According to Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), a total of 9,08,153 passengers travelled by the metro on Thursday. Of these, 4,35,516 passengers took the ride on the Purple Line and 2,85,240 on the Green Line. Ridership through the Majestic interchange station stood at 1,87,397.

A senior official in the BMRCL's operations and maintenance division stated that ridership had begun to pick up after weeks of falling numbers following the fare hike. For example, ridership on April 8 was 8.52 lakh.

Daily metro ridership dropped by about one lakh after the BMRCL hiked fares by an average of 51.55 per cent before discounts and 41.7 per cent after discounts on February 9. The maximum hike was 71.42 per cent.

Average daily ridership on weekdays before the hike was 8.5 lakh.

The BMRCL hasn't shared month-wise ridership figures since February.

The highest ridership in Namma Metro's history was 9,17,365, recorded on August 14, 2024.

Bengaluru's metro network spans 76.95 km with another 98.6 km under construction.
