Smart meters must for new, temporary power connections in rural areas under Bescom

Bengaluru: Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) has made smart meters mandatory for all temporary and new power connections in rural areas under its jurisdiction, effective July 1. 

In February, the power utility agency had made the installation of smart meters mandatory for all new and temporary power connections in urban areas under its jurisdiction. 

"Smart meter deployment in the urban areas of Bescom jurisdiction, including Bengaluru city, began on February 15, 2025. With this latest directive, the initiative is now being extended to rural regions. Applicants for new or temporary electricity connections can purchase smart meters from Bescom-authorised outlets and proceed with connection formalities," it said in a release. 

According to Bescom, the directive is based on guidelines laid out by the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) on March 6, 2024, regarding installation of smart meters. 

"Installations have since been carried out in phases," it added. 

Smart meters come with a host of features, including remote communication with the Bescom control room. 

"Smart meters are equipped with a GPRS/RF-based communication system for data collection and offer server and cloud connectivity. Utilising Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) technology, these meters enable direct communication between consumers and Bescom by gathering electricity usage data. Users can monitor real-time electricity usage, voltage and power factor through a mobile application and access recharge options," Bescom said. 

Smart meters also allow consumers to make advance payments and recharge for a duration they wish for.
