Zameer Khan succumbed to the injuries at the hospital, while Shameel is battling for life. Murtaza and his sons are said to be rowdies too, according to the records available with Mandi Police.

The vehicle carrying the top cop had just entered the college compound, where the commissioner was scheduled to participate in the valedictory of a workshop on juveniles, when the assailants, dared to go ahead with their plan.

No sooner the siblings came out of a barber shop at the intersection of New Sayyaji Rao Road and Dewan Seshadri Iyer Road around 3.30 pm, they were attacked by the gang, which was possessing a ‘long’ and knife.

In no time, they were found in a pool of blood. Zameer had been stabbed, besides receiving a cut on his forehead.

Shameel sustained injuries on his back. The passersby soon shifted them to K R Hospital, where  Zameer was declared brought dead.

Shameel was shifted to Columbia Asia Hospital on Mysore- Bangalore Road for further treatment.

Two suspected to be behind the attack are learnt to have been taken into custody for interrogation.

The reason

What led to the incident was attack and counter attack that was triggered by an almost non-incident, several years ago. Their neighbour Muneer was allegedly manhandling his wife, when the brothers intervened. The two had to face wrath of Muneer, Khadir, Maqbul and a few others, who had bashed up them.

It was followed by the attack on Maqbul, his sons Zandu and Bandu, Mujju and a few others by Murtaza and his sons, accompanied by three others, at a mosque near Kabrastan Junction in Mandi Police station’s limits in 2010.

All the cases have been booked by the same police. Maqbul who was waiting to avenge the attack on him, is said to have led the recent attack, according to Zameer’s father Murtaza who gave the names of 16 people holding them responsible for his son’s death, including a lady.

He said Muneer, Haneez, Khadir, Anjum, Maqbul and his sons Zandu and Bandu, Rahul alias Mubarak, three children each of Sunni and Bibi, Basheer and Akbar were behind his son’s death.

In grief

Learning about the incident, a large number of relatives and friends thronged the emergency block of K R Hospital.

Zameer’s wife Shabana was inconsolable, so was Shameel’s wife Sumaya.

Police bandobust

Cops drawn from different police stations in Devaraja sub-division were summoned to the hospital to handle the surging crowd. DCP (Law and order) Basavaraj Malagathi, ACPs V A Pujar and A K Suresh (N R Sub-division), Inspectors Shanthamallappa (Devaraja) and T B Rajanna (Lashkar) monitored the security arrangements.
Mandi Police have registered a case.
