<p>Belagavi: Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda on Tuesday reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to expanding access to quality medical education to students from all sections of society.</p>.<p>To that end, the Centre is working towards adding 75,000 seats at medical education institutions across the country, said the union minister.</p>.<p>Nadda, the chief guest at the 15th convocation of the KLE Academy of Higher Education and Research (KAHER), said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was keen on ensuring that students from the more vulnerable sections of society could pursue medical education.</p>.India needs holistic, inclusive healthcare system: Nadda.<p>“Under Modi’s leadership, the number of undergraduate medical seats has gone up from 45,000 to 1.85 lakh, while 20,000 postgraduate medical seats have been added, taking the total number of available PG seats to 57,000,” he added.</p>.<p>Lack of opportunities in the country often resulted in Indian doctors and engineers exploring careers in other nations until recently, said Nadda. “But policies formulated by Modi have ensured that we now have enough talent to meet the requirements of not only India, but of the world. That is why we have increased both undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats,” said Nadda.</p>.<p>The PM’s vision for an integrated approach to <br />medicine resulted in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) starting a department entirely dedicated to AYUSH.</p>.<p>“We have also started a Centre for Integrated Medicine,” said the union minister.</p>.<p>Union Minister for Consumer Affairs Pralhad Joshi said that India was well on course to becoming the world’s third-largest economy. Although India was among the leading service economies, Modi’s leadership has propelled a huge growth in the manufacturing sector as well, he said. “We are exporting medical and defence equipment today. Over the past three years, export of defence equipment has generated a revenue of Rs 25,000 crore,” said Joshi.</p>.<p>Professor and head of cancer surgery at the Tata Memorial Centre in Mumbai Dr Shailesh Shrikhande was conferred with the honorary Doctor of Science degree on the occasion. Dr Shrikhande stressed the need to evolve Indian solutions to Indian problems.</p>.<p>The convocation ceremony was presided over by KAHER chancellor Dr Prabhakar Kore, who is also the chairman of KLE Society.</p>
