Civil engg the job sector to watch out for: retd IAS officer

Bengaluru: Civil engineering is an option where job opportunities are aplenty for students. One need not seek jobs here as several jobs will land on the student’s lap, according to former IAS officer M N Vidyashankar.

He was speaking at the 10th edition of Eduverse, Jnana Degula 2018, that was inaugurated in the city on Saturday. Organised by DH and PV, this serves as a platform for students who have completed class 12 or PUC and are looking for career options.

Vidyashankar said civil engineering would be the third largest job creator for a few years to come and said students could hope for a salary like none other field would offer.

“Even last year, a student got an entry level package of 1.8 lakh per month. This is far more than what an average IT company offers,” he said.

Vidyashankar explained, at the time of the IT boom, several colleges started to discontinue civil engineering courses for a period of seven to eight years. “This led to a dearth of people. With a number opportunities arising in the field now, students will have no dearth of jobs,” he added.

With respect to infrastructure and construction, he said, “Over the next 10 years, roads and highways, aviation, shipping, energy, oil and gas will continue to have momentum with annual growth in excess of 9%. A third of new jobs in Indian economy will be in this sector.”

Noting that cyber security could be another major job provider, he said NASSCOM estimates that by 2020, India will require at least one million cyber security professionals.

Vidyashankar said big data and data analytics would be another area which would see no dearth of jobs in the decades to come.

The public relations officer of the Karnataka Examinations Authority also spoke to students about the counselling procedure for engineering and medical seats.

He said students could also chose from a range of paramedical, dental, Ayush and agriculture courses, if not mainstream ones. He said document verification would be conducted in at least 15 centres, besides the KEA centre in Malleswaram. “Students should mindfully chose seats based on their priority. Sometimes, students commit mistakes and there is no room for corrections after the given dates,” he said.
