Close on the heels of a string of suicide bombings in Sri Lanka, a high alert was sounded along the 320-km coastline on Thursday.

Following intelligence reports that sleeper cells are planning similar acts of terrorism across the country, Karnataka State Coastal Security Police (KSCSP) has stepped up vigilance along the coast.

KSCSP sources told DH that KSCSP DGP A M Prasad has passed the orders about intensifying patrolling along the coast and to be in a state of preparedness to face any eventuality.

The city police have also been put on alert by intensifying beats at crowded places, including bus stands, railway stations, malls and places of tourist attraction. Physical verification of suspects staying in lodgings also has also been initiated, sources told DH.

In the background of heightened security, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sandeep Patil convened a meeting of administrators of vital installations like MRPL, NMPT, Airport, malls, Infosys and other religious places.

He directed the institutions to have a background check down on their security guards and others by availing police clearance certificate.
