<p>Zilla Panchayat President Rekha Huliyappa Gowda said that there is a need to instill confidence in physically challenged. <br /><br /></p>.<p>Speaking at World Disability Day Nethaji Subhashchandra Bose district stadium in Chikmagalur on Tuesday, she said “Disabled people do not need sympathy. Instead, there is a need to shower love on them. All they require is justice that is denied to them.” <br /><br />The 13th Finance Commission has released Rs 1.4 crore to the Zilla Panchayat. The second phase of the amount will be released shortly. About three per cent of the income of the zilla panchayat has been earmarked for the welfare of the physically challenged. <br /><br />She said “if the government permits to provide individual facilities, then we will purchase equipment and distribute it among the needy. The achievements of the physically challenged should become a model for others.” <br /><br />Asha Kirana school for Blind President Dr J P Krishne Gowda urged the government to increase the earmarking of funds from three per cent to five per cent for the welfare of the disabled. <br /><br />District and Sessions Judge Kamala inaugurated the programme. Deputy Commissioner B S Shekarappa flagged off the sports meet. Civil judge Mahadevaiah, Women and Child Welfare Deputy Director Chandrashekaraiah, CMC Commissoner Nagabhooshan, ZP CEO Karunakar and others were present. <br /><br />Somwarpet<br /><br />Department of Public Instructions, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, and Somwarpet BRC organised a World Disability Day by holding a taluk-level sports meet for physically challenged children, at Government Higher Primary School grounds. <br /><br />Inaugurating the meet, Block coordinator Mahadev said disability is not a curse. All children have hidden talents. Parents and teachers should nurture the talents. 100 metre race, ‘kere dada aata,’ pick and speak, folk song, quiz, drawing, and other competitions were held. Taluk Primary School Teachers Association President K U Prakash and others were present.<br /></p>
