<p>Shivamogga: School Education & Literacy Minister Madhu Bangarappa announced on Saturday that a residential school in the vicinity of the Kidwai Cancer Hospital in Bengaluru will be started to aide children suffering from the disease with continuous treatment and medical facilities along with education.</p><p>Addressing media persons here, he said cancer is now a curable disease but, it needs continuous treatment from the initial stage. Complete treatment takes six months or a year. During this period, children should not be deprived of education. Therefore, a residential school is being started.</p><p>The minister stated that over 3,500 school-going children suffering from cancer have been identified in the state.</p>.Karnataka: Health department takes over command & control centre '108' ambulance services.<p>Bangarappa said a non-governmental organization (NGO) conducted a survey and children suffering from cancer were identified. Over 1500 children will be enrolled in the residential school at a time. The officials have been instructed to identify 3 acres of land belonging to the department near the Kidwai Hospital. He said that free food and accommodation will be provided to the parents who come to take care of the children.</p><p>He also informed that the proposed school is planned to startis expected to start functioning from July this year after making necessary infrastructure and financial arrangements. Buses will be arranged to take the children to and from the hospital. Madhu Bangarappa said that special training will be given to teachers to treat children suffering from cancer as normal children and not as patients.</p><p>District Congress President R. Prasannakumar, District President of the Guarantee Scheme Implementation Authority Chandrabhupal, and District Congress Backward Classes Unit President G.D. Manjunath were present at the press conference.</p><p><strong>'Schools are responsible for poor performance due to diets'</strong></p><p>Madhu Bangarappa said that the district institute of education & training will be given the responsibility of improving the performance of the schools in SSLC examinations to be held next year.</p><p>He said the schools that did not record good pass percentage have been identified in the state DIET staff must ensure that such schools do well in SSLC examinations next year. If they fail to achieve the target, they would be transferred to the other district.</p><p>The minister also said that steps are being taken to avoid allegations that DIETs have become inactive. They are becoming refugee camps.</p><p>"As a result of the radical changes undertaken in the department, government schools have recorded good results in the SSLC examination this time. Our children have given an answer to those who mocked the minister for not knowing Kannada and those who mocked his hairstyle," he said. </p>
