The recommendations of the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) set up by the Supreme Court to study the impact of illegal mining in the State are unscientific, said Rajya Sabha member Anil Lad, on Tuesday.

Anil Lad, who was in the City to participate in the convention of Congress workers, addressing mediapersons said: “The CEC report, instead of highlighting the irreparable damage caused to the environment and the immense drain on the State exchequer due to illegal mining, has only shown the way to legalise illegal mining activities in the State.”

The penalty of 10 per cent imposed for PT encroach and 15 per cent for dump encroach is unscientific, he added. If the report had recommended penalty based on the extent of mining, it would have acted as a strong deterrent to illegal mining in the State, he said.
