A bandh call given on Tuesday against the implementation of Dr Kasturirangan report on Western Ghats, was largely peaceful in Madikeri. No untoward incident was reported.
The voluntary bandh call was given by various organisations and political parties under the aegis of Kasturirangan Varadi Virodhi Horata Samiti.
Members of Samiti and other organisations, who gathered at the Gen Thimmaiah Circle in the city in the morning, urged State government not to implement the report.
In the evening, MLA Appacchu Ranjan, JD(S) district unit president V P Shashidar, Congress leader Nayak C S arrived at the spot and also urged the government to reject the report.
Barring medical shops, all other shops were closed. However, supply of milk and newspapers remained unaffected.
No bus service
Following the protest, private and KSRTC buses didn’t ply on the roads.
However, Mysuru-Mangaluru buses that travelled via Madikeri plied as usual.
Though schools, colleges, and government offices remained open, the attendance of students and officers, respectively, was low.
Normalcy returned after 6 pm.
