Prof H M Maheshwaraiah, who has specialised in Kannada linguistics, took charge as the new vice chancellor of the Central University of Karnataka (CUK) at the main campus in Kadaganchi on Monday.

Maheshwaraiah is the third vice chancellor of Central University of Karnataka. He was associated with the Karnataka University in Dharwad and was recently appointed  Director of Centre for Excellence in Classical Kannada, Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysuru.

The uncertainty prevailing over the appointment of a vice-chancellor has come to an end with this move. President Pranab Mukherjee, a Visitor of Central University of Karnataka , issued the order of appointment for five years.

CUK Prof M N Sudheendra Rao, who was holding the office of the vice-chancellor since April 2014, handed over the responsibility to Maheshwaraiah. “My responsibility is to build the institution and I am confident of doing so with the support and cooperation of all stake holders,” the 64-year-old professor said.

Meanwhile, Sudheendra Rao has demitted his office to return to the Indian Institute of Technology in Chennai.
