'Mindscapes' exhibition explores the unexplored

One can picturise a brain, however it may be impossible to portray a mind. Suraj S Walke (22), has decided to explore the unexplored in his art expo ‘Mindscapes’ that kicked off at Orchid Art Gallery in Mangalore on Saturday.

With thin, finely grades washes, sensitive tonal values, meta-physical visuals, patterns and divisions of picturesque spaces, the artist has given shape to his artistic imagination into abstraction.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Walke says he draws inspiration from nature. In my expo, I have tried to portray the different attitudes of the mind, he says. The artist who has used the colour scheme-green, blue and brown says that these colours are cool and are close to nature, a main reason of him using them in his artwork.

Apart from mindscapes, the artist has brilliantly portrayed nature with an aerial view. “I used see a lot of nature related TV shows. They used to show the view from the top and this fascinated me to portray nature in this style,” he says.

In mindscapes, the artist has displayed more than 15 paintings with unique titles such as ‘Holy Places of Nature’, ‘Melody of Nature’, ‘Play with Light’, ‘Rythm Form’ among others.

Inaugurating the expo, Mahalasa School of Art HoD N S Pattar said that imagination is defined from other view points, but a clear idea of the role of creative imagination in a work of art is difficult to comprehend.

“Walke has not preplanned his artworks but has developed them through a process of playing with transparent colours, delicate textures and simple reliefs which are referenced by his mind,” he said.“One cannot teach art. It comes from within. Experience is the best teacher as it gives understanding,” pointed out Pattar.

Orchid art Gallery Director William Pais said that he sees the artist’s depth in the paintings. The artist is a sincere person and this quality is represented in his artwork, he says.

Eminent Heart Surgeon Dr Yusuf Kumble was present on the occasion. The expo will be held at the Gallery till June 23.

About the artist

Suraj S Walke, born in Mangalore has completed his BVA degree in painting from Mahalasa College of Visual Art. He has participated in 15 group shows and is one among 96 artists selected to participate in the Lalit Kala Academy-National Exhibition held in 2010. He has also won Camlin Art Foundation Awards, PTL Mangalore and MS Academy Ujjain MP. Mindscapes is his first solo exhibition. The artist  says that he wants to pursue his Masters in Fine Arts in Bangalore University.
