Maharaja’s High School and PU College Alumni Association president B S Sridhara Raj Urs has appealed to the parents to admit their wards to the 186-year-old institution.

“Maharaja’s High School was started as Raja’s Free School at Nazarbad in 1833, by then Maharaja Mummadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar. The Raja’s Free School is the mother of the Maharaja’s High School, Maharaja’s Government Pre-University College, Maharaja’s Degree College, Yuvaraja’s College and finally the University of Mysore,” Urs said.

Urs, who was also the state director for PU Education, said, “The school with a glorious past has a host of alumni with international fame. Writers R K Narayan and Chaduranga, former Governor of Reserve Bank of India H V R Iyengar, late chief minister D Devaraj Urs, former vice-chancellor D V Urs, theatre person M S Satyu, politicians Vedanta Hemmige and A H Viswanath, Dr C D Sreenivasa Murthy, Dr Chandrashekar of Aaditya-Adhikari Hospital, columnist Srihari and many others were students of the institution. When the school was overflowing with students, the Maharaja’s Bifurcated High School was started at Nazarbad, to accommodate all of them”.

“Due to an increase in schools in and around Mysuru, the strength of the school dwindled in recent years. The Alumni Association adopted the school for its overall development. The school staff and the head of the institution matched external efforts. Fortunately, the school, headed by vice-principal Mahesh, is making good progress. Old students have instituted scholarships and donate notebooks, geometry boxes, pens, etc to students. Group study system is introduced by dividing the students into groups of five, under the care of an intelligent student. This year, the results have improved and further improvement is expected in 2019-20,” said Urs.

Many senior students like Dr Chandrashekar and advocates Shivaprakash and Shivakumar are helping students from economically backward classes, he said.
