<p>Five per cent rebate on property tax paid in the month of April has struck a chord with property owners making a beeline to the Mysore City Corporation (MCC).</p>.<p>When collection for the day was closed on Wednesday (April 25), around Rs 15 crore property tax had been collected, public relations officer Sudha who also holds the additional charge as revenue officer told Deccan Herald.<br /><br />The rebate on tax in the particular month announced by the government every year encourages property holders to make use of the facility and hence the people are flocking to all the nine zonal offices and the main office of MCC.</p>.<p>With still five more days to go for the month to end which also coincides with the closing of rebate facility, the officer exudes confidence of further increase in the amount collected.<br /><br />According to the records available, a total of 1.78 lakh properties come under the ambit of city corporation.<br /><br />The properties include residential, commercial and also government buildings.<br /><br />Barring government buildings who have to pay 25 per cent of the estimated value of the property as ‘service cess,’ the remaining two have to pay the tax as per the guidance value of the property.<br /><br />In the case of residential buildings, it’s 0.69 per cent and for commercial buildings 1.03 per cent. It also differs in the case of hotels and film theatres, who have to pay 1.72 per cent. There is also a different slab for industries, the officer added.<br /><br />Unlike previous years, when collecting property tax was an arduous task for growing number of blatant defaulters, the development in recent years augurs well.<br /><br />10 pc increase<br /><br />In the previous fiscal (2011-12) the city corporation was able to collect Rs 64 crore against the target of Rs 70 crore. It’s an achievement recorded at 10 per cent more than the year 2010-11, where Rs 53 crore had been collected.<br /><br />The officer appealed to the property owners who are unaware of the facility to make use of the same. Those who prefer to pay in the following months — May to June — will have to cough up the prescribed amount. Those who pay later from July onwards will have to pay a penalty of two per cent imposed on the total property tax.<br /></p>
