A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting with top government officials and representatives of the Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners and Agents Association on Wednesday.

Under the TN model, the Public Works department was to extract sand and auction it at 1,850 identified points on a per load basis. The policy was to come into effect from April 1 but could not be implemented as new rules are yet to be framed, officials said.

Sand extraction will be allowed for existing lease-holders till the new rules are framed, the officials said and added that a Government Order to this effect will be issued soon.

The new policy was envisaged to put an end to sand mining irregularities in the State and increase revenue collection from sand extraction.

Lorry Association Secretary B V Narayanappa has welcomed the government’s decision. “Following the government’s assurance we have decided to withdraw our proposed call for an indefinite lorry strike,” he said.
