<p>It’s not just the time for keeping city tourist friendly with healthy environs, but also to make judicious use of the podium to teach do’s and don’ts on handling waste.<br /><br />Dasara Arrangements and Cleanliness Sub-committee has decided to launch a programme on management of solid waste as a prelude to the opening of Dasara, on October 13. Also, it will request every other panel to avoid using plastic.<br /><br />Secretary of the sub-committee and health officef of MCC Dr Nagaraj told media on Thursday that the programme aiming at achieving zero waste management will be launched at Devaraja Market on the day. The market produces highest of vegetable waste, and yet it’s mixed with other types of waste. Awareness on segregation of waste at the source will be created among the traders distributing two different coloured dust bins to dispose degradable and non-degradable wastes, the officer said. <br /><br />As many as 280 pourakarmikas will be roped in on contract basis for cleaning works for 10 days. <br /><br />They will be dispatching duties round the clock in three shifts and will be paid Rs 225 daily wages according to the respective rules. <br /><br />Most importantly, keeping in mind the health of sweepers, they wil be provided radium uniforms and masks. To avoid littering of waste, huge containers will be placed at the select spots, besides (if possible) mobile toilets.<br /><br />Vice-president of the sub-committee Sharath said a task force consisting of five pourakarmikas, two health inspectors and a doctor is also formed to attend to emergencies. The other arrangements include; erecting boards to create awareness on maintaining cleanliness, jatha by pourkarmikas and nursing students, and also lunch for pourakarmikas.<br /><br />Chairman Purushotham, PRO, MCC and assistant secretary Sudha were present.</p>.<p>CAVA to host art fair<br /><br />The art gallery at Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts (CAVA) on Sayyaji rao road in the city will be transformed into a renewed hub of artefacts from October 20 to 22 from 11 am to 8 pm.<br /><br />Addressing media recently, chairperson of Dasara Arts Mela Sub-committee Kamalamma said students from different art schools in the State will be sending their artefacts- be it painting, sculpture, graphics, applied arts or photography for the exhibition-cum-sale during the period. That apart, on the spot drawing contest has been organised for school students on October 21 at 10.30 am at CAVA premises. <br /><br />The contest will be organised in two sections; first standard to seventh, and eighth to PUC. Five prize winners will be feted in both the sections.<br /><br />For State-level artefacts cash prizes have been fixed in the range of Rs 5,000, Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000, besides five consolation prizes. In the open category, both professional and amateurs can participate, the chairperson added. </p>
