Two more jumbos die

Surya, a tusker belonging to Hebbala camp in Mattigodu range of Nagarhole National Park was found dead inside forests on Thursday.

As usual, the elephant entered forests on Wednesday night for grazing but never returned to the camp the next morning.

The mahout went in search of Surya and found him dead in the forests. A forest officer said Surya has died in a fight with wild elephants.

In another incident, Vijaya, 32-year-old tusker died on Friday, after a brief illness. It had been captured in the operation rogue elephant last year.

Dr Srinivas from Hunsur was giving treatment for the pachyderm for last three days. But the jumbo never recovered, said Kushalnagar RFO M S Chinnappa. The last rites were performed in the camp area, after the postmortem.

Somwarpet Sub-Division ACF M Shashidhar visited the spot. With Vijaya’s death, the total number of elephants in Dubare Camp has reduced to 21.
