<p>Bagalkot: A total of 19,000 cases pertaining to land acquisition for stage 3 of the Upper Krishna Project (UKP) are pending in various courts of the district. </p>.<p>With only 25 per cent of the necessary land acquired so far, the number of cases is bound to go up drastically in the coming days. </p>.<p>Of the cases that have been decided upon, the government is yet to pay compensation amounting to Rs 2,000 crore.</p>.<p>The delay in the payment of compensation has meant that the interest dues are piling, accounting for Rs 1 crore each passing day. </p>.<p>The government has to pay interest at an annual rate of 12 per cent to 15 per cent, from the day the land losers filed appeals in courts, seeking compensation higher than that announced by the UKP relief and rehabilitation (R&R) department. </p>.Karnataka: Belagavi session to give gig workers bill a miss.<p>The government is supposed to acquire 1.33 lakh acres for stage 3 of the project. But it has acquired only 29,500 acres from farmers so far. </p>.<p>The R&R department has announced compensation four times the market value, but the farmers are not happy and have approached the courts.</p>.<p><strong>Additional courts sought</strong></p>.<p>The rising number of cases has retarded the hearing in the courts. A proposal was sent to the government to increase the number of courts to hear these cases, but it is yet to be approved. </p>.<p>Ramesh Badnur, president of the Bagalkot advocates’ association, said from cases filed as recently as a month ago to those that are four years old are pending in the courts. </p>.<p>While the pendency of cases is causing inconvenience to farmers, it is also a burden on the exchequer as the interest dues mount. Badnur has sought that an additional six courts should be set up to speedily dispose of the cases. </p>
