A 50-year-old woman was trampled to death by a rogue elephant at the Kadumane tea estate in the taluk Tuesday night.

The incident occurred when Vimala Rani, the victim, was on her way from home to work through the estate, along with her daughter Rajalakshmi. The rogue attacked Rani with its tusk and trampled her to death. Rajalakshmi ran away and escaped being attacked by the jumbo by a whisker.

The woman’s death sparked a snap protest by estate workers, demanding that the authorities take steps to tackle the elephant menace. They said elephants roam about in front of their houses at night and that they feared for their lives.

Deputy Conservator of Forests Lakshman, Assistant Commissioner Srividya, Tahsildar Chandramma and Assistant Conservator of Forests Choudhary visited the incident spot.
