<p>Mumbai: In a shocking incident, a student of the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) at Powai in Mumbai died by suicide in the wee hours of Saturday.</p><p>The student was identified as Rohit Sinha (22), who hails from Delhi.</p><p>The student was pursuing a course in Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science and was in his fourth year.</p><p>The student jumped from the terrace of the hostel building, initial reports said. </p><p>He was rushed to Hiranandani Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.</p><p>The Powai police station has registered an accidental death report (ADR) and investigations are in progress. </p><p>"The student jumped off the terrace of the hostel building. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead,” Mumbai Police officials said. </p><p>The IIT-B in a brief statement said, “It is with deep sorrow that we inform you of the untimely passing of our final-year student, Rohit Sinha, in a tragic incident that occurred late last night. It is very unfortunate that a promising career came to a premature end in such a manner.”</p><p>The statement said that Rohit Sinha’s death has saddened the entire community on IIT campus. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. We pray they find the strength to cope with this immense loss,” it said. </p><p>So far, no suicide note has been found. </p><p><strong>Second incident in recent times</strong></p><p>This is the second incident of suicide in the IIT-B in recent times - the last being on 12 February, 2023, when Darshan Solanki (18) is reported to have jumped from the seventh floor of his hostel building and his body was found by the security guards who saw him in a pool of blood at the IIT-Bombay Powai campus. </p><p>Darshan from Ahmedabad, who hailed from the SC community, was a first-year student of the B Tech (Chemical) course. The reason for him taking the extreme step was caste discrimination. </p>
