<p> Mahatma Gandhi's grandson Kanubhai Gandhi was today cremated here, with hundreds of people, including leaders of both BJP and Congress, turning up to pay homage to him.<br /><br /></p>.<p>Kanubhai, 87, passed away yesterday at a private hospital where he was admitted following a heart attack.<br /><br />Kanubhai's wife Shivalaxmi Gandhi lit the funeral pyre at the Umra crematorium this afternoon in presence of his niece (his sister's daughter) Neelamben Parikh who came from Navsari to attend his last rites.<br /><br />Prior to that, his mortal remains were kept at a hospital run by P N Arora Charitable Trust for around two hours for people to pay last respect.<br /><br />Congress leaders including former MP Tushar Chaudhary, former Surat MLA Dhirubhai Gajera, city Congress president Hasmukh Desai, and BJP leaders including Gujarat Minister Nanubhai Vanani, and Surat mayor Ashmitaben Shiroya were among those who attended the funeral.<br /><br />Kanubhai, the son of Mahatma's third son Ramdas Gandhi, along with Shivalaxmi, had been living at an accommodation at the Radha Krishna temple run by Punjabi Samaj here for the last three months.<br /><br />Kanubhai, a former NASA scientist who was famously captured in a photograph pulling Mahatma Gandhi's walking stick as he led the Salt Satyagraha at Dandi in Gujarat, had come back to India in 2014 after living in the US for over four decades.<br /><br />A graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Kanubhai also worked with the US Defence Department on the wing structure of fighter aircraft. He had decided to spend the rest of his life in India, along with his wife.</p>
