<p>Karunanidhi's wife Dayalu Ammal, who is an accused in the 2G spectrum allocation scam, could not have been involved as she has been suffering from Alzheimer's and other age-related illnesses for last several years, her doctors told the special CBI court here on Thursday.<br /><br /></p>.<p>P Gopal, who is providing treatment to the accused, deposed in the court as a defence witness in the money laundering case of the 2G spectrum allocation scam.<br /><br />The Chennai-based doctor told the court he was treating the 87-year-old Ammal, wife of DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, for last 27 years for multiple ailments, most of which were age-related. He said that Ammal was diagnosed with Sjogren's disease around 2000. She was first treated at Chennai and was later referred to Singapore, UK and USA for treatment. Sjogren's syndrome is a disorder of the immune system identified by two most common symptoms — dry eyes and a dry mouth.<br /><br />"In 2012, it was noticed that she (Ammal) was suffering from behavioural changes and experts were called in and the investigation proved that she was suffering from Alzheimer's disease," the doctor said.<br /><br />Doctors found her suffering from Alzheimer's disease when she was taken to NIMHANS (National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences) in Bengaluru. Following this, her treatment for Alzheimer's began, he deposed. “She is still under treatment of experts from Chennai. Her condition is deteriorating," he added.<br /><br />However, Ammal’s doctor admitted before the court that he was not an expert in treatment of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia when special public prosecutor of CBI Anand Grover cross examined him and asked him if he was an expert in treating patients of the two diseases.<br /></p>
