While riding together on a bike, just 200 metres from the clinic, Surjith attacked Kavin with a knife.</p><p>Kavin belonged to the Devendra Kula Vellalar (DKV), a Dalit sub-caste, while Subhashini is from the Maravar community, part of the Mukulathor group along with Kallar and Agamudaiyar communities.</p><p>Director General of Police Shankar Jiwal said a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against Surjith and his parents under sections 296(b) (obscene act), 49 (abetment to a crime), and 103(1) (murder) of the BNS. </p><p>“Initial investigations reveal the relationship between the boy and the girl is the motive behind the murder,” the DGP’s office said in a statement.</p><p>Leading filmmakers Pa Ranjith and Mari Selvaraj have strongly condemned the killing and urged the government to take action against such crimes.</p><p>After Subhashini faced social media backlash over unverified reports suggesting she denied her relationship with Kavin, Gowsalya Shankar—whose own husband was murdered for marrying her -- wrote a heartfelt letter to Subhashini. </p><p>“Come whatever, you have to stand by Kavin. One who has been murdered is your own, one who held your hand, and one who walked alongside you. Kavin would have gone to speak to your brother only because you called him. You must stand firmly on the side of justice for Kavin,” she said. </p><p>Gowsalya, who is now an entrepreneur-activist lost her husband, a Dalit, at a young age, also told Subashini she can understand her predicament of what would happen to her if she speaks against her family and stands behind Kavin. </p><p>“I have been able to live without any support from my caste-obsessed family for the last 10 years. Ambedkarite and Periyarite have made me believe I am their own. I have not compromised even now, and I never will. Whatever pressure you face, stand courageously for your Kavin. I am with you; we are with you,” she said. </p><p>She also asked Subhashini to tell exactly what happened to the law enforcing authorities by being honest to her love for Kavin. “Don’t be afraid of anything. I am here to support you; we are here for you,” she said.</p><p>Caste-related violence, including in classrooms, has been on the rise in districts like Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Thoothukudi for the past few years despite efforts by the government and communities to address them. </p>
