Telangana mulls new law to deduct salary of govt employees who neglect their parents

Addressing a gathering before handing over appointment letters to newly selected group-II employees, Reddy urged them to be compassionate toward people who approach them with problems.

Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday announced that his government is planning to introduce legislation mandating a salary deduction of 10–15% from government employees who fail to care for their parents. The deducted amount would be credited directly to the parents’ bank accounts.

Speaking at a programme organised to distribute appointment letters to Group-II exam qualifiers, Revanth Reddy said the measure aims to ensure aged parents are not neglected. "If any employee fails to look after their parents, 10 to 15 percent of their salary will be deducted and transferred to their parents’ accounts. Just as employees receive their salary on the first of every month, their parents will also receive the amount on the same day," he said, adding that legislation to this effect would be enacted soon.

He further urged children, irrespective of gender, to remain responsible toward their parents. “Daughters should care for their parents even after marriage. Sons may receive dowries, cars, and in-laws, but must never abandon their parents. You owe what you are today to them,” the Chief Minister said. Revanth said he would have the proposed bill drafted by newly appointed officers and directed Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao, who was present, to form a committee of officers to draft the legislation.

The Chief Minister also took a swipe at the previous BRS government, accusing it of neglecting job recruitment during its ten-year rule. “During the last decade, not a single Group-I or Group-II notification was issued. It is the people’s government that fulfilled this long-pending promise within 18 months of coming to power,” Revanth said.

Handing over the appointment letters, Revanth reminded the newly recruited officers that Telangana’s statehood was achieved through the sacrifices of students and unemployed youth. “The previous rulers formed the government on those very sacrifices but forgot the aspirations of the unemployed. Had they acted responsibly, these youth would have secured jobs eight years earlier,” he remarked.

He criticised the BRS leadership for prioritizing their family’s interests over the state’s youth. “Group-I posts remained vacant for years. Our government completed the recruitment process and successfully conducted Group-II exams soon after taking office,” he said. “The TGPSC has taken up the task of making you partners in rebuilding Telangana. We all are one,” he added.

Revanth alleged that the previous regime attempted to obstruct recruitment processes by filing court cases and orchestrating misinformation campaigns on social media. “Despite several hurdles, the government filled 60,000 jobs in its first year,” he noted.

Warning against the resurgence of sentimental politics, Revanth cautioned people to remain vigilant. “Certain BRS leaders are trying to exploit emotional sentiments to regain power. People must stay alert to such disgruntled political forces,” the Chief Minister added.
