<p>Even as the Andhra Pradesh police file an FIR against the Bollywood star under the Prohibition of Indecent Representation of Woman Act and section 294 (Obscene acts and songs) of IPC for the indecent promos and posters of the “Dirty Picture”, movies that could be classified as adult and love from yesteryears are making record collections. <br />Throwing in a bit of mythological movies, the season seems to be the era of remake hits. <br />Hit by the recent financial crunch, the Telangana agitation and the widespread popularity of dubbed films has found a viable survival strategy in 1970s and 1980s remakes. <br /><br />Close on the heels of Balan’s film on the Southern sex siren silk Smitha came the remake of the Malayalam 1978 chart buster, “Rathi Nirvedam. “Malayalam actress Jayabharati had outshone in the sexy role in the Telugu remake directed by Bharatan and the film had been a runaway success.<br /><br />Thirty-two years later, the film had caught the imagination of yet another Malayalam director, T K Rajeev, who took the same movie with an unchanged title with actress Swetha Menon and Sreejit in the lead. The movie, which was released in Telugu at the same time as “The Dirty Picture,” had racked up better collection than the Bollywood flick. <br />“If Dirty Picture made 7 crore business in AP, ‘Rathi Nirvedam’ made 11 crore,” says Kalyan, a film producer and financier.<br /><br />“Rathi conveys a message about social stigma and both directors (Bharatan and Rajeev) have not tried to use either sex or voyeurism into sleaze as is done wantonly in Dirty Picture,” says Ramakrishna Reddy, film critic of Hyderabad . Remakes of several 30-year-old love stories have once again hit the Telugu celluloid world in the wake of video piracy hitting the bottom line of all recent films featuring popular artistes.<br /><br />“We have remakes of ‘Maro Charitra’ (Kamal Hassan starer) and also ‘Padhaharu Vayidinile’ (In the age of 16). Even the popular story of Lava Kusha (mythology) has been redone as ‘Srirama Rajyam’ (Balakrishna and Nayanatara).” Industry watchers attribute the success of remade movies to a mega slump in Telugu industry triggered by a fierce competition between superstars like Mahesh Babu, NTR junior, Pavan Kalyan, Venkatesh and others. <br /><br />“Telugu audience has made a right choice as the new block busters are only noise and no stuff inside,” says prominent film director and producer Dasari Narayan Rao .<br /><br />Action, meanwhile, on “Dirty Picture” star seems to continue under the aegis of the city corporation. <br /><br />The police action against Balan came on a petition by local advocate Sai Krishna Azad alleging that Balan had appeared in indecent promos and trailers of the film.<br /></p>
