The police would open fire at “anti-social elements” seen indulging in violence and causing damage to public property and harming persons, District Superintendent of Police Pradip Kumar told reporters here on Thursday.

The miscreants had damaged the windscreens of government and private-owned buses in Cuddalore, Vriddhachalam, Nellikuppam and Panruti, besides torching two DMK offices housed in thatched sheds in the region during the past two days.

Around 13 buses belonging to the state-owned transport corporations had been damaged in violence in the district, police said.

Both government and private night bus services to rural areas have been stopped since Wednesday in the district. A group of unidentified persons forced shop owners to down shutters in Cuddalore, Nellikuppam and Vriddhachalam areas on Wednesday evening.
