<p>Political leaders in Tamil Nadu, including DMK president M Karunanidhi, on Friday condemned India’s decision to abstain from voting on the US-sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).<br /><br /></p>.<p>Karunanidhi said abstaining from voting has resulted in a situation where India has to “hang its head down in shame”. <br /><br />He added that a country like the US, which is not affected by the war in Sri Lanka, has sponsored a resolution thrice on the issue for the sake of upholding human rights. <br /><br />Moreover, 23 other countries that do not have any Tamilian connection have even voted for it. In this situation, India’s decision to abstain is “akin to a mother killing her own child”, he said. <br /><br />On Thursday, India had abstained from voting on the US-sponsored resolution at UNHRC, saying it imposes an “intrusive approach” of international investigative mechanism which was counter-productive, apart from being “inconsistent and impractical”. <br /><br /></p>
