A senior Uttar Pradesh cop has found himself in trouble after photographs of his family members with scores of bundles of Rs 500 currency notes went viral on social media platforms, much to the shock of the police officials in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district, about 60 kilometres from here, where he was posted.

According to the police sources here, the cop, identified as Ramesh Chandra Sahni, who was in-charge of Behtamujawar police station in the district, has been sent to the police lines and a probe has been ordered into the matter.

The photographs, which went viral on social media platforms on Thursday, showed several bundles of Rs 500 currency notes spread on the bed sheet while the wife of the cop and their three children were seen sitting around the notes.

In some other pictures, the children are seen clicking selfies with the currency notes. A woman was also seen showing the currency notes in another picture. As the pictures went viral, district police officials took cognisance of the matter and summoned Sahni to explain the photographs.

Sources said that the cop claimed that the photographs were two years old and had been clicked when he had withdrawn money from the bank for the purpose of getting his house built.

A senior district police official said that Sahni was sent to the police lines after his explanation was not found to be satisfactory. ''He has also been asked to give a written explanation,'' the official added.

The pictures evoked sharp comments from the netizens, with many saying that the money must have been earned through illegal means.

''We will conduct a thorough probe in the matter,'' the official said.
