Abattoir upgrade: Khader writes to PM, UD minister

Urban Development Minister U T Khader, said that he has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Urban Development Minister Hardip Singh Puri, seeking suggestions on the proposed modernisation of Mangaluru's only abattoir. This project, if approved, would be implemented under the Smart City project, he added.

Elected representatives and NGOs are opposing the move to modernise the slaughterhouse at Kudroli.

“Once we get the Centre's reply, we will take the proposal forward,” said Khader at a press meet in Mangaluru on Tuesday.

He said: “As chairman of the advisory committee on Smart City projects, I had proposed the modernisation of the abattoir at Kudroli. It is in a deplorable condition. Keeping hygiene in mind, it needs to be modernised. The allegations made against the proposal saddened me”.

He however, appealed to people not to level counter-allegations and create confusion.

"In my letter, I have requested a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for the modernisation of the abattoir, under the Smart City project, he added.
