Instances of heart diseases are rising in the younger generation with the most common heart issues being coronary artery diseases, heart failures, irregular heart rhythms, an increased risk of angina, and heart attacks.

The biggest cause of heart diseases in youngsters is their willful ignorance towards a healthy lifestyle. Lifestyle issues such as smoking and substance abuse, alcohol abuse, lack of exercise and poor dietary choices also add to the mess.

Routine health check-ups are a must even if you don’t have any symptoms of heart disease, and it should be compulsory for men over the age of 35 and women over 40. Also, a vast majority of youngsters and adults fail to identify the warning signs of a heart problem: chest pain, breathlessness, undue fatigue, acidity and lack of stamina, chest pressure and cold sweats.

To maintain a healthy heart, avoid tobacco, alcohol, and keep an eye on your BMI. Include at least 30 minutes of regular exercise in your routine, and supplement it with healthy food intake, quality sleep and stress management.

Know this: it’s never too late to start eating healthy food. So, include vegetables, whole grains, fruits, nuts and seeds every day in your meal. Eat fish like salmon or any other healthy seafood two to three times a week. Add beans and legumes to at least two meals a week, and up to six eggs a week. Choose reduced-fat milk, cheese and yoghurt. Drink a lot of water also.
